Father John visited us in school to celebrate the first three days of February. He blessed St. Brigid's Crosses for her feast on February 1st and then recalled the story of St. Blaise which is associated with Candlemas Day (2nd) and the Feast of St Blaise on the 3rd. Father then blessed our throats to keep them healthy through the year.

Science Week Ski Challenge
The whole school took part in a Science Week Ski Challenge. A skier needed to be built from just tin foil and lollipop sticks. Each class had their own competitions to choose a representative who then took on the rest of the school. It was a very tight finish with Oisín in Fourth Class coming out victorious by just 2 cms. Thanks to Daniel, Colm and Conal in 6th for making the ski ramp.

All children in the school had a huge 'Caint 's Cómhrá' for Seachtain na Gaeilge. We practiced key questions and phrases in our classes and then engaged with children in other rooms. It was lovely to all get to speak Irish together.

Dear Parents,
All the staff in Cappataggle N.S. would like to wish you a very Happy Christmas and all the best for 2022. It has been a challenging term but as a school community we have really pulled together and your support is always appreciated.
Some books have been sent home today but we fully expect, and greatly hope, to be back on January 6th. We are having top of the range Clevertouch Interactive Whiteboards installed over the holidays in every classroom so the teachers can't wait to try out their new toys. We have also taken delivery of a number of HEPA filters which should hopefully help with ventilation in the colder months ahead.
We have contacted the Bishop's Office regarding Confirmation dates and these should hopefully be released at the end of January. Father Kirby will also let us know once he's decided on a First Communion date early in the New Year.
Many thanks and see you all in 2022.

Dear parents and students,
We look forward to welcoming you all back to school tomorrow, Wednesday 1st of September.
I have added an updated Covid Response Plan to the Covid Section of the website and some links sent to us by the Department of Education. The plan is largely the same - we await the delivery of CO2 monitors which will be used to check air quality in the school.
Familiarise yourself with the symptoms of Covid 19 but if in doubt seek your GP's advice and err on the side of caution. Email either your class teacher or school email when your child has been absent as we mark the reason on the rolla. You can also phone the school office. This will be helpful to have if your child exceeds 20 days of abscences in a school year.
For tomorrow please ensure you have:
* Completed the Return to School Form sent on Text a Parent (click the link and upload)
* Packed pocket sanitiser for children in 1st - 6th Classes
* Labelled all items coming to school
We will give out book rental books over the coming days as we wait on deliveries.
Mary's new office days are full days on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please use the messaging service if you phone on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Alternatively send an email to cappyns@hotmail.com.
There has been lots of work taking place in school this summer including roof and sewage works. We are also looking forward to our garden space being completed. We plan to use this for children to play in, store toys/equipment, change into wellingtons and shelter from the weather.
Parents of Infants are welcome into the playground for the first days but we ask all other parents, as always, to send children in from the gate. Please continue to avoid congregating and wear face coverings if possible.
As before children from 3rd to 6th enter through the rear door and children from Infants to 2nd enter through the front door.
We will contact parents of First Communion children as soon as we have the most up to date guidance on numbers allowed in the church. Please bear with us for a few days.
County Photos will be in school next Monday 6th. I'll send a reminder over the weekend.
Thanks as always for your support. We are really looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.

Thank you very much for your cooperation following Covid 19 protocols. You can revisit these at any time on the Covid 19 page. Welcome back to all our Children
Good afternoon Parents,
We have had a lovely first two weeks back with all the children from Infants and First and Second. It is now the turn of 3rd to 6th Classes to join us from Monday.
Before returning you need to fill in the Return to an Educational Facility Declaration form. These will now need to be filled in whenever your child is absent from school. The form can be found on the Covid Page of our website and has also been sent on Seesaw. Please return via email or Seesaw - a digital signature is fine. It doesn't need to be filled in after returning from the weekend. This form has been included by the department as an extra protection for schools.
I have uploaded on the Covid Page an updated Response Plan and a letter from DCMO Ronan Glynn. I will highlight the main points to take from these.
Firstly, school will be just the same for children as it was when they left in December. We have always had robust measures in place and these haven’t changed. It will still be a happy and welcoming environment for our pupils.
If your child is feeling unwell please err on the side of caution and don’t send them to school. Seek advice from your GP. We are also happy to help with questions in any way we can and if we don’t know the answer to your query we will endeavour to find out.
The updated guidance states that all cold and flu symptoms can be Covid symptoms, including a runny nose. You know your child best so if they appear under the weather we would appreciate you not sending them to school. This is something you have all been very supportive of this year. Remember if any member of the household has symptoms or is awaiting a test all close contacts should restrict movements until the test is negative.
I have uploaded the Governments Isolation Quick Guide for U13's to the top of the Covid Page so it’s easy to find.
At drop-off and pick-up we ask that you maintain distance as much as possible and wear a face covering. As previously 5th and 6th Classes will come out at home-time first, followed by 1st and 2nd and then 3rd and 4th.
Parents please do not enter the playground if possible. If you need to speak to a teacher, we are always available by phone or email.

Virtual Pet Show
Thank you to everyone for your wonderful entries for our very first Cappataggle N.S. Pet Show. We had huge interest and our School Council spent many hours pouring over photos and videos before awarding ribbons. Please see the full results. The winners in each category were then judged for 'Best in Show' which unanimously went to Aaron Campbell and his sheepdog Ross. Aaron wins a hamper of goodies and a €20 voucher kindly sponsored by Moran Court Vets, which includes Railway Veterinary Clinic in Loughrea. Prize ribbons will be sent out today, March 5th, or on March 15th when the other classes return. I have uploaded some pictures of the winners - unfortunately our website doesn't upload videos but we will try sending these on Seesaw. Well done all!

StarCamp
STARCAMP is kick starting 2021 with FIREWORKS!
As a gesture of goodwill and in the spirit of encouraging children to have fun and stay healthy, mentally and physically over this new and hopefully final lockdown, STARCAMP have decided to roll out their incredibly positive, fantastically fun, unique Online Camp for every single child in Ireland for FREE.

And every parent deserves to get something for FREE after the year they’ve had! (They’ve also earned some quiet time!).
Having cost thousands to create, produce and record, Aideen and her team spent weeks writing, making, editing these 5 x 90 minute programs for children.
Contributors include Keith Barry (showing us magic tricks) and Don Conroy (giving drawing lessons) along with lots of the usual STARCAMP team teaching everything from science experiments, baking, magic, jokes and games to music, dance and drama!
The Online Camp (which can be watched over 5 days or all at once) can be availed of by signing up to it on their website NOW at www.starcamp.ie Please go to the page “Virtual Camp - Jan 21” at the top of the page, fill in your details and a link will then be emailed back to you which you can log into from Monday morning!

Update for Parents

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we come to the end of the school year for 2019-2020 I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support, both for the staff and for your children, since March 12th. It has been a difficult and strange time for all of us but as a community we have pulled together.
Schools are still awaiting clarification on what September will bring. We dearly hope that we will be able to open our doors to everyone with an emphasis on handwashing, cleanliness and social distancing with proper procedures in place to support this. This is something we will work on over the summer months and we will communicate clearly to you all. I know all the staff are very eager to return to their classrooms.
On Friday we had a lovely celebration of our wonderful sixth class; Ajaya, Aliyah, Asher, Billy, Conor, Courtney, Daniel, Erin, Iosabélla, Maeve, Molly, Patrick, Pearse, Rory and Seán. Thanks to all the parents who helped make it such a memorable day for a very special group of children. The Parents Association organised fabulous hoodies and a certificate to be presented to each child. The Graduation Drive-By was also enjoyed by all. Everyone in Cappataggle N.S. would like to wish them the very best on the next stage of their journey. We will miss you!
Many of these children, however, will return to us for our Confirmation celebration in Autumn. The diocese has informed us that Confirmation and First Holy Communion will take place then. We have no further information on this or a particular date but will be guided by Bishop Duignan. Please rest assured that as soon as we know more parents of these children will be informed.
I will also be in contact with parents of our new Junior Infants over the summer. They unfortunately couldn’t visit us in June but we will organise a way for them to be introduced to the school and to their new teacher Ms. Egan before September.
Today, Tuesday June 23rd, I will be in school from 4pm -7pm to collect in Book Rental Books. You can leave them at the gate and I will pick them up there. Please label your pile of books with your family and children’s names so I know who has returned their books – a sheet, with the name, sellotaped on or left inside the cover of one of the books will be fine.
On a personal note, on what has been a very interesting first year as Principal, I’d like to thank you all for making me feel so welcome to the school. It is a wonderful environment to work in and I am looking forward to settling in further next year.
If you have questions at any point do use the email cappyns@hotmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Kind regards,
Shane Dervan

This week we sadly say goodbye to Ms. Spellman. We would all in Cappataggle N.S. like to thank her for her kindness and dedication to the children in her care this year. We are very sad to see Ms. Spellman go and wish her all the best in the future. It is lovely to welcome back Ms. Burke who will be taking up her role again as SET.
International Nurses Day May 12th
On the occasion of the International Day of the Nurse and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, we would like to join people all over the world in thanking nurses for what they do. The theme for this year is” Nursing the World to Health”.
A budding journalist and past-pupil summing up how many of us feel.
As we enter another week of lockdown we are all beginning to miss time with our friends. The staff would love to fill our class pages with pictures of the children. Please send in a picture, from the last few weeks, to your child's class teachers email address and they will put them all together. Have a good week!

All schools are expected to draft a new admissions policy to come into effect in September 2021. Staff have put together a draft of this policy and would appreciate any feedback you may have to bring to the Board of Management before it is sent to the Bishop. If you have any comments please email principalcappataggle@outlook.com.
Bishop Duignan has been in contact with schools in the Diocese to inform us that all current Confirmation and First Communion schedules have been cancelled until further notice. He adds that 'Once the government deems it possible to gather again we will consult with the parishes, schools, etc on how to proceed with drawing up new schedules for the celebration of these sacraments.' Thank you for your understanding.
Staff have all updated their class pages ready for a new week of learning so please take a look. These will be updated each Sunday evening ready for a new week. We welcome any comments or questions so do email us. Stay safe and well.
Dear Parents,
Today would have been the last day before our Easter Break. All the staff would like to communicate our thanks for your support and positivity during this very difficult time.
We won’t give any specific work during this 2-week period but staff will be checking emails, so any support we can give you and the children we will be happy to. Perhaps return to the grids that were put on our class pages and continue choosing activities from there if you so wish.
The Easter section in our Religion books will not have been completed. Grow in Love is now also available online. Go to www.growinlove.ie and click ‘Sign In.’ Then sign in using the following details:
Email: trial@growinlove.ie
Password: growinlove
This might be useful as Easter celebrations will look very different this year.
Some parents mentioned having trouble accessing Bua na Cainte. It may be that you need to download it through Google Chrome so try using that browser instead of Explorer.

We also had an email from AgriAware and I include the text from that below:
Agri Aware, Ireland's agri-food educational charity has relaunched their popular primary school programme Incredible Edibles and opened it up to families to participate during this time of isolation and school closures.
Since food has been flying off the shelves in many supermarkets across Ireland, Agri Aware are encouraging families to learn all about where that food comes from and the importance of consumption of Irish fruit and vegetables, for a healthy balanced diet.
There are five tasks to complete in this Family Challenge, on topics such as food origin, identifying Irish food, planting, cooking and healthy eating week. Any parent can sign up their kids for free and on completion of the 5 tasks, may be in with a chance to win some prizes worth up to €175.
Parents are simply asked to take pictures of the worksheets given and write a simple description on what they did for each task. There are also two levels to facilitate different abilities of learning, beginner and advanced.
To sign up to this free project, or for more information, visit: www.incredibleedibles.ie
We will update you with any additional information as soon as we have it as regards what will happen after the Easter holidays and if it will be necessary, and possible, to send home textbooks from school.
Best wishes

Dear Parents,
Staff will update their class pages on Monday 30th with further work for the children. It has been mentioned before but please remember that this is suggested work - you may have established a routine that works better for you and your family situation. School on TV begins on RTE on Monday from 11-12 so will also be worth tuning in to.
Teachers had been putting together additional books to be collected on Monday but unfortunately that will now not be able to happen, until at least after Easter. As always the health and well-being of our families is most important and we would like to be as supportive as we can. Each teacher has set up a class email, which they will also put on their page on Monday, so do feel free to correspond if you have any questions; we'd be delighted to help.

Good morning Parents,
The children may, at this stage, be running out of books to read. www.getepic.com/students allows you to sign up and read free for 30 days. The lego sheet opposite also has lots of challenging ideas if you have boxes of lego at home. |
Dear Parents,
Each class teacher has put up some suggestions for activities appropriate for their age group on their class pages. Check these out; I hope you find them useful. Please note there is no expectation to complete the grid but it has accessible ideas which children should be able to engage with relatively independently. They can colour them in on the grid or record what has been completed in their homework journals. Encouraging older children to lead activities with younger siblings (if possible) is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills (and diplomacy) and as we mentioned before do take this opportunity to explore the children’s own interests.
Social Media is awash with suggestions of websites, apps, YouTube channels for parents to follow so I won’t bombard you with many more. One that I would draw your attention to is Natasha Lamb on facebook/YouTube who is teaching the basics of British Sign Language Monday-Friday at 1pm. It is a wonderful skill to have and may interest the children. If it’s hard to find on facebook or, if you don’t use it, here is the youtube address: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9w889Lid1JHB-AX4dCoQoQ?fbclid=IwAR1Z5IYIL0-21IR5c5_52SvSysEtmPtR3zM7MsIBJdZovw_vAYy-hPWa_u4

Dear Parents,
Today would be our first day back after the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. As the closure on Thursday was quite sudden our staff had limited time to prepare work for the children. We also don’t want you to feel under any pressure to complete suggested work. This time is a great opportunity for children to follow their own interests and to work independently; an invaluable skill. Here is some further advice for the week ahead.
1. Keep a routine with the children.
Set aside some time, put on a stopwatch and clear all distractions for schoolwork. Perhaps try and base it around school times. The children can record in their homework diary each day what they have completed. It will give them a sense of accomplishment.
2. Now is the time to get your child reading!
Libraries may be closed but there are so many books waiting to be read at home. Library members have free access to Borrowbox . It has audio and ebooks available. It works like the library so you do have to wait sometimes until a book is returned.
Audible is an app from Amazon which has every (or practically) every book. I would highly recommend it for our middle and senior pupils. The first month is free and you can cancel at any time.
For our younger pupils, Oxford Owl is an excellent site. It has the books of the Oxford reading tree. The books are animated and read aloud and there are many exercises and activities for each book.
Storyline Online is a lovely site for infant children. Famous actors read a wide variety of picture books.
3. Tables
Practice tables at every opportunity. For the younger pupils work on addition and subtraction (the story of the numbers). 3rd class upwards can practice multiplication. There are many apps and games online but you can also use a pack of cards to play a vast array of games like this:
4. Useful Websites

Practice tables at every opportunity. For the younger pupils work on addition and subtraction (the story of the numbers). 3rd class upwards can practice multiplication. There are many apps and games online but you can also use a pack of cards to play a vast array of games like this:
- Remove the Aces, Jacks, Queens and King.
- Shuffle and divide the cards between two players.
- Each player reveals their top card. e.g. 4 and 6
- Whoever is first to give the answer (24 for multiply or 10 for addition) keeps the two cards.
- (With younger children it could be the person who calls out the bigger number)
- Game ends when the cards are used up and the winner is the person with the most cards.
4. Useful Websites
- Scoilnet is our Department of Education resource site. It has many topical theme pages for use with all ages.
- Readtheory.org this site focuses on comprehension. Very suitable for 3rd class upwards. It has a test at the start and the child works through short passages answering questions. Register as a parent.
- Ask About Ireland is an easy to use website for older children.
- https://www.busythings.co.uk/families This is a great website for younger children. Again it allows a free trial for parents.
- spellingcity.com is offering free access to the site with code: VSCFree90
The children were delighted to receive 3 Rebounders, sponsored by CARS, for the playground. 5th and 6th classes tested them out and gave them the seal of approval.
Congratulations to Ronan, Conal, Shíona and Aaron who were triumphant in the Under 11's Category in the Ballinasloe Heat of the Credit Union Quiz. They now go on to the next round in Athlone in March.
Best of luck to our teams from 3rd to 6th class taking part in the Credit Union Quiz
Grandparents Day
Green Team Tree Planting
We started 2020 by planting new trees in the school grounds. We chose trees suitable for our soil and placed them in compost to give them the best start and every opportunity to grow. The school Green Team helped Ms. Fallon to dig the holes and bed them down. Great job everyone!
Christmas Mass
Fr. Kirby celebrated mass in the school hall for the staff and children. Our school choir and band performed some wonderful Christmas carols and it was a very special way to end the term and prepare for Christmas. We would like to take this opportunity to wish the whole school community a very happy and peaceful Christmas.
Our Christmas Fair
Many thanks to all who supported our Christmas Fair. With your generosity we raised in excess of €2,000! Well done to the children on their craft-making and musical performances. Thanks too to the Parent's Association for a mouth-watering cake sale and eye-catching nail bar, Brendan for music, Bridie for her raffle prize and Mrs. Fallon for leading the choir and to all who helped on the day.
Our Christmas Fair is ready! There are pinatas, wooden snowmen, Christmas decorations and pencil holders among the variety on offer. There will also be a cake sale, face-painting and a nail bar with the children providing festive entertainment. Bridie Pender's world famous Christmas cake is the star prize in a tempting raffle. We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday from 11.30am.
Congratulations to our prize winners in the Glan Agua colouring competition. Each winner received a very generous One-For-All Gift Voucher.

Girl Power - Cumann na mBunscoil Champions 2019The Cappataggle Camogie team played a Camogie Blitz on their home turf on May 30th. They played Aughrim, Esker and Kilchreest. The girls were victorious in all their matches. They were through to the Camogie Final in Loughgeorge. The girls trained hard and remained focused throughout the following week. On the 11th of June our girls met Moylough in the final. Moylough scored the first point however the Cappataggle girls were not to be defeated. They responded with two points and led for the rest of the match. Moylough fought hard but thanks to Molly and Lila’s goals, Ellie’s superb goalkeeping, the amazing defending by the backs Katie and Sophie and of course the fantastic Cassandra and Sinead in midfield we won the match 4-4 to 2-7. Our subs also played a vital role in getting their team to the final and with their fantastic support. All the girls trained hard all year and their victory was well deserved. Thank you to both coaches Orla Gilmartin & Padraig McHugh. Well done to all involved.

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2019 - Trad sa Halla
Déardaoin seo caite rinneamar ceiliúradh ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge sa Halla. Sheinn roinnt páistí ón ranganna trí, ceathar, cúig agus a sé ceol dúinn. Bhí rogha iontach uirlisí ceoil ann. Bhí siad ag cleachtafh go díograiseach le cúpla seachtain anuas agus bhí siad go hiontach ar fad. Bhí cúpla páistí ag damhsa freisin. Bhainimid an-taitneamh as an seisiún. Míle buíochas do Ms Mannion as cleachtadh leis na bpáistí. Bhí an cuid is mó dos na páistí gléasta i nglas don ocáid. Maith sibh!

School fadó fadó
We had two very special visitors today, Mary Lawlor and Annie Broderick. They came to the community centre and told the 3rd and 4th class boys and girls what school was like when they were attending. We learned that it was very different to our school today.
They had to walk miles to get to school every day and the common thing was to travel barefoot in the Summer months. Annie explained to us that the dentist used to come to the school and pulling teeth was commonly done and this was without any anesthetic. Mary and Annie showed us samples of old copybooks, a tuning fork, books and many other artifacts.
We sincerely thank Mary and Annie for their time and most interesting stories!

Huge Investment
The school has invested €5,000 in a new guided reading scheme for our school. This scheme is being implemented in 1st & 2nd Class. Children are reading graded readers to match their ability. We are confident that this approach will have a positive effect on the overall reading ability in the school. This was only possible because of the huge financial support we receive from parents year on year.

Beekeeping
Last week the school had a visit from a local beekeeper Noel Leahy, who told them all about the work he does. The children were able to learn about how bees make honey and all of the different jobs that bees do. They got to observe actual honey bees at work in a special type of observation hive and taste some different types of honey at the end of the workshop. One type of honey was a wildflower honey and the other was made from heather which grows locally. Noel encouraged the children to grow natural wildflowers to entice bees into our gardens and help them continue their great work.

Congratulations to our pupils in 5th and 6th class who celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation on the 5th of May. The children put a lot of hard work and preparation into their special day.Well done everyone!

Catholic Schools Week
Catholic Schools Week was celebrated this year from January 29th to 2nd February. The theme this year was “Catholic Schools: Families of Faith”
On Monday we reflected on the first family we are part of. This family is our “Family at Home”. The members of our family at home are our first teachers in life and in faith and are very important to us all.
On Tuesday the theme was “Our School Family”. School is a place of learning, growing, playing and sharing. In our school family we learn more about the world around us, about the love of God and how to treat others as Jesus asked.
Wednesday was “Grandparents’ Day”. We were asked to think about how our grandparents have a special place in our families. They show us how to love, how to be caring and how to share. We also remembered grandparents no longer with us.
On Thursday the theme was “Our Parish Family”. We become a member of our parish family through Baptism when water is poured over our heads and we are anointed with oil. Our church is the centre of our parish family.
As Catholic Schools Week came to an end we were asked to think about how we are part of a “World Family”. As a world family we have a responsibility to look after and care for the world God created for us. We are all one family and Jesus asks us to care for one another.
Operation Transformation - 2018
In conjunction with Operation Transformation, children are using the running track to get some exercise. Each day weather permitting all classes go across to the track and walk or run the track. When they return to the classroom they record their laps.

The last of the snow......(",).....we hope!

Word must have travelled far about our annual celebrations as three celebrities even made an appearance Mrs Brown, Lionel Messi and last but not least Donald Trump! Great fun was had by all. Well done to our competition winners- Emma Treacy, Maia Nevin, Sinéad Daly & Pearse Hardiman.
****School Closed Tuesday 17th October 2017***
Following announcement from Minister for Education this afternoon Cappataggle N.S. will remain closed tomorrow Tuesday 17th October. 16/10/2017
15 October, 2017 - Further statement from the Department of Education and Skills
Following a special meeting of the Government Task Force on Emergency Planning in response to the imminent Storm Ophelia, the Department of Education and Skills is now informing all schools in areas affected by Met Éireann’s status red wind alert that they are to act on the Department’s advice and remain closed tomorrow, Monday 16 October.
For parents, this means that their children will not attend school tomorrow in any area where there is a status red wind alert already announced or announced in the intervening time.
Schools in areas affected by a status orange alert should remain vigilant, and keep themselves appraised of any hourly and other updates from Met Éireann, and from their local authorities, local radio, and an Garda Síochána. In all events, and if in any doubt, schools should err on the side of caution.

Boys Mini Sevens Hurling Team Report
On the 6th of October the boys mini sevens team travelled to Castledaly pitch for the mini sevens blitz. When we got there we met the Galway captain David Burke! We got a photo with him. No teams showed up so Mrs Burke rang the organiser and the organiser said the blitz was in Gort. We headed off to Gort pitch. When we got there we went into our dressing room. We shared a dressing room with Peterswell and their manager was Galway hurler Conor Cooney. We played Gort in our first match and then we played Kilchreest and in the third match we played St Columbus NS, Ballyturn. We won our three matches and then we had a break. We then played Lurga after the break. We beat them too. We were now into the final against Peterswell. We played the final and we won by 2 points in the end. We all shook hands with their manager Conor Cooney. We were all so happy that we won and now we are through to the finals in Lough George on the 20th of October. Discover Primary Science 2017
We recently submitted our Discovery Science project for this year’s DPSM awards. The Discover Primary Science and Maths award is an opportunity to showcase all of the wonderful work that the school is doing in the areas of science, maths, ICT and engineering. Lots of great work in science took place throughout the year in every classroom. Each room carried out experiments, predictions and designed and made different things. The work was recorded and photographed and put together to form the project. Here is a flavour of some of the lessons that took place. Junior and senior infants completed lots of maths activities earlier in the year and they also learned about springtime on the farm. 1st and 2nd class carried out some interesting investigations on materials and designed waterproof jackets and absorbent teabags. 3rd and 4th completed an engineering challenge where they had a race against each other building structures from household materials and solving engineering problems. They also learned about light and magnetism during the year. 5th and 6th built vehicles from k’nex and investigated electricity and how circuits work, so that they could power their creations. Well done to all the students and Miss Hurley on their hard work. We hope our application is successful and that we receive the DPSM plaque of STEM excellence for 2017. Huge thanks to Ms Hurley for coordinating the programme.

Digital Schools Award 2017.....
We are working towards an award to become a Digital School of Distinction. This is an award programme which promotes, recognises and encourages best practice in the use of technology in primary schools. Supported by HP Ireland and Microsoft Ireland, the award has been developed to help schools to further integrate technology into the classroom. IT plays an important part in our school life here in Cappataggle. All pupils from infants up to sixth class get regular access to the laptops. Educational games, Microsoft word, power point and computer coding called Scratch are just some of the programmes that the children get to use. We have had a visit from Therese Farrell who is associated with the Digit School Of Distinction, Mrs O’ Brien demonstrated with some of the Green School committee, how they input their work into the online green school form ,infants played Jolly phonics games, 1st and 2nd demonstrated their skills in Microsoft word, 3rd and 4th played a quiz using Kahoot, while 5th and 6th showed their power point presentations. We are continuing to work towards receiving our award and hopefully we will become a Digital School of Distinction. Our wish list for the future is to purchase some I pads. Huge thanks to Ms Mannion for coordinating the programme.

Catholic Schools Week was celebrated from January 29th – February 3rd this year. The theme this year was “Learning with Pope Francis to care for our common home”. Children took part in a number of activities during the week and celebrated the wonderful contribution that Catholic schools make, not only to their local communities, but to Irish society as a whole. We celebrated Grandparents Day on Tuesday where grandparents were invited into the school to celebrate mass with us. Thanks to Fr. Stankard for a lovely ceremony, as always and the PA for providing refreshments afterwards. Grandparents who are no longer with us were remembered on our “remembering tree” and were given a special mention during the ceremony.

Maths Week - October 15th - 23rd
Lots of activities took place in Cappataggle NS during the week of the 15th to the 23rd of October. These activities were for Maths Week. Every year, schools in Ireland and throughout the world participate in Maths Week and complete fun and interesting activities which promote maths and how we use it every day in our lives.
Junior and Senior Infants went on a maths trail around the school. They found that there were so many things that they could count. They counted all of the windows in the school, how many cars were parked outside and how many wheels were on the cars. They also looked at the registration plates!

They played lots of maths games during the week and during Aistear time. They learned some new counting rhymes too.
Third and fourth chatted about their favourite sports and plotted all the information onto block graphs.
All of the classes enjoyed Maths Week and realised that we do maths during the day without even realising it sometimes.
Space Week 2016
Space Week was held this year during the week of the 3rd to the 8th of October.
All of the classes enjoyed some hands-on activities and learned some interesting facts about space.
First to fourth class learned all about the planets in the solar System and compared their sizes using different types of fruit. The watermelon was the biggest planet and a peppercorn was the smallest. Our earth was shown to be the size of a cherry tomato!

They also put the planets in the correct order starting with the planet that is nearest to the sun.
Fifth and sixth class also represented the distances between the planets by making a Pocket Solar System. A Pocket Solar System is a long strip of paper which the children folded in half, then in quarters and finally into eighths. They marked the locations of the planets on the folds in the paper. It was interesting to see how far away some of the planets are. Earth seemed to be very close to Mars but the children learned that it would take 80 days to travel there by rocket! Imagine how long it would take to get to Pluto (dwarf planet)?
Junior and Senior infants looked at all the planets on the Interactive Whiteboard. They learned their names and labelled and coloured some lovely pictures. All of the children’s work will be entered into the discovery log for the Discover Primary Science Award later in the year.

Proclamation Day - Tuesday 15th March
As part of the commemoration of the Easter Rising in 1916, Tuesday 15th March was designated Proclamation Day in primary & secondary schools throughout Ireland.
Here in Cappataggle the ceremony began with some traditional Irish music & dance. Then the children from 1st & 2nd Class gave a short presentation on the history of the Irish flag. Afterwards all present stood and sang Amhrán Na bhFiann.
Donal Byrnes read a piece from the 1916 proclamation. Then some children from 5th & 6th Class read their "Proclamation for a New Generation", which was written by all the children in the Ms. Fallon's room. Some themes in the proclamation included Equality, Homelessness, Education & Health.
Fr. Stankard said a few words about the 1916 Rising and changes it brought about in Ireland at that time. Following on from this Joe & Fr. Stankard raised the flag outside the school. He finished with a short blessing. It was a wonderful uplifting day where we all stood proud as they raised the tricolour outside our school.
Finally everyone was invited back to Ms. Mannion & Ms. Fallon's room to see the children's Easter Rising projects.

Pancake Tuesday
Teachers and pupils were very busy in school today! We watched Ms. Kerrigan demonstrate how to make pancakes and we had the very important job of tasting them. They went down a treat! We have all been making huge efforts to keep our lunch boxes healthy over the last few weeks so we really enjoyed nutella, sugar and golden syrup on our pancakes. We are already looking forward to next year! If only we could have pancakes for lunch everyday! Thanks to Leah Treacy, one of our past pupils for helping out today in the hall.
Operation Transformation
In conjunction with Operation Transformation Healthy Lunchboxes, children in Cappataggle have been availing of the running track at lunch times with Ms. Kerrigan to increase their fitness levels.

Third/Fourth and Fifth/Sixth Classes are well on their way to completing a half marathon. They all record their laps on their own table sheets. Every class have reported that they feel much fitter and can now run much further. Some children have even been spotted doing extra laps in the evenings!
It’s your move! The enthusiastic girls from 5th and 6th class have been learning the ‘It’s Your Move’ hip hop routine and have been teaching the whole school. All the children have been up and active, dancing to ‘Love Myself’ by Hailee Steinfield.
Well done everyone and keep it up!!!!!!

Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair - 20.12.'15

The Christmas Fair was a fantastic event and everyone had a great day. There was a magical atmosphere right throughout the school. Children & staff were working hard in the busy stalls selling beautiful arts and crafts made by the talented children of Cappataggle. Popular stalls amongst the children were "Guess The Weight Of The Turkey", "The Cappataggle Family Challenge" & "Jack Murray's Personalised Bird Houses stall". Santa's visit was a big hit with everyone and he even used our school bell to let everyone know he was coming! Panic set in throughout the school Monday morning when we couldn't find the bell.......... but thankfully we found it and Santa hadn't taken it back to the North Pole afterall!
Children also enjoyed getting their faces painted, listening to the lovely traditional Irish music and watching the one and only "Home Alone" in our very own cinema. Parents enjoyed chilling out over a coffee in the coffee shop, buying cakes from the cake sale and of course the lovely carol singing at the end of the day!
The Christmas raffle was a great success! We had lots of generous prizes to give away on the day including a hotel break away, generous vouchers, floral arrangements, amazing hampers and lots lots more. People were so generous in their donations in the weeks prior to the Fair. A big thanks to everyone who dropped prizes into the office.
A huge thank you to the parents association, volunteers, school staff and children who worked so hard in the weeks leading up to the fair and on the day. Thanks to all the parents, grandparents, pupils, past pupils and neighbours who came out to support our school.

Art Workshops December 2015
As the school day just wasn't long enough to get everything done we decided to hold Art workshops after school! There was huge interest amongst the children and the workshops were a great success. We had lots of volunteers who did great work on the night and gave us lots of ideas! A big thanks to Siobhan Treacy, Sandra Nolan, Natalie Nevin & Caoimhe Byrnes who kept the children busy with lots of different art & craft activities on the night.
3rd & 4th Class made fairy doors. Each child designed their very own fairy or portal door. They worked very hard making and decorating these. They packaged these with some magical fairy dust . Once this dust was sprinkled around the doors the fairies moved in. The children have some very bizarre stories about the new lodgers, with one even messing up the bedroom at night and tidying up everything the following day! We could all do with one of these!
December is a busy month for everyone but this year we managed to fit in a floral arranging demonstration!A big thank you to the Parents Association for organising a great night and Mary Harney on delivering a wonderful floral demonstration! Mary Harney combined a wealth of experience and enthusiasm for floristry to deliver a fantastic workshop on the night. I think its safe to say many of us surprised ourselves and ended up with a beautiful finished piece on the night. We raffled two amazing floral arrangements at the Christmas Fair. Thanks again to the Parents Association, Mary Harney & all who supported on the night.
National Flag Presentation Ceremony - 5.11.'15
To commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising and to celebrate 100 years since the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, the Government has tasked Óglaigh na hÉireann with delivering a National Flag to every Primary School in the country. This is a key part of the Ireland 2016 commemorative programme and will see members of Óglaigh na hÉireann, in uniform, visiting schoolchildren and teachers in over 3,200 schools across the Republic.
On Thursday 5th November Lieutenant Grattan O' Hagan and Corporal Pat McGillion stationed in Athlone visited our school. We learned about how the National Flag should be cared for and the protocol that surrounds this vibrant symbol of our nation. We listened to Lt. O' Hagan reading the Proclamation. We answered some very tricky questions. The oldest and youngest pupils in our school accepted the National Flag and the Proclamation on our behalf. Finally we sang our national anthem Amhrán na bhFiann. It was a very proud day for our school. We will keep the Tricolour very safe until the 15th March 2016, when every school in the country will fly it proudly.
