Our Aistear theme of 'Food'
Over the month of May the children have been engaging with the very interesting Aistear theme of 'Food'.
This theme has provided excellent learning experiences for the children and has linked to many other curricular areas such as the strand of 'Money' in Maths, 'Ag Siopadóireacht' in Gaeilge, the story of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' in English and lots more.
As the theme of 'food' is so broad, the children engaged with playful experiences in relation to this theme over one full month with changing stations every week.
Here are some pictures of the differing stations.

Outdoors and Adventure Week!!
The children had the best time engaging with fun activities as part of our 'Outdoor and Adventures Week'.
The children enjoyed Aistear outside in the sunshine, as they all got a chance to play in the water station, mud kitchen and weeding in the garden.

Ms. Burke brought the lovely Senior Infants outside for literacy and phonics!
For P.E. the children undertook a fun obstacle course. As you can see the competition stakes were very high!!
To end a wonderful week, the children brought in their favourite teddy and we enjoyed a teddy bear's picnic in the sun.
All those happy faces would put a smile on anyone's face!!

Geraldine from ‘Heritage in Schools’
Today, Geraldine from ‘Heritage in Schools’ visited the junior and senior infant classroom. She
talked to the children about different types of sheep, how farmers remove wool from sheep and
she even demonstrated how to spin wool on her spinning wheel.
The children learned about how wool can be dyed to make different colours and they created lovely
artwork of wooly sheep using this coloured wool.
We discussed different clothes made of wool, that people used to wear in the past and some
children took part in a fashion show to show the old wooly clothes! Geraldine visited on
a great week as her visit tied in really well with our Aistear theme ‘The Clothes Shop’ and
our Irish topic of Éadaí.

Hurling in P.E.
Today was our first day enjoying hurling with Brendan and Martin. We learned many new skills and especially how to work together as a team. We are focusing on the fundamental skill of running this half-term so it was lovely to have so much space in which to run safely. A video has been uploaded to Seesaw of our session so if you would like to view it follow the instructions below to log in to your Seesaw account at home. Unfortunately our website doesn't support video.

Christmas 2021!
We have had great fun preparing for Christmas over the last couple of weeks in school! We have been super busy between creating beautiful Christmas art, taking part in the Toy Show pyjama party, Christmas jumper day, Santa's workshop in Aistear and keeping up to date with the antics of our mischievous elf.
Ms. Mahony and all the junior and senior infant children would like wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Erin the Barn Owl
We were lucky enough to get up close and personal with Erin the barn owl in school this week!
John from The Barn Owl Project told us all about what barn owls eat, how to tell the difference between a male and female barn owl and what to do if we see any injured barn owls or nest sites.
We all thought Erin was SO beautiful and her visit to the infant classroom created great excitement!!!

Science Week 8/11/21 - 12/11/21
Science week was a big hit in the infant classroom this week!!!
The children developed their 'predicting' and 'experimenting' skills as they engaged with lots of exciting experiments.
They made a lava lamp; created a rainbow of colours using skittles; made a rain cloud in a jar; turned the white petals of a flower PINK and they also sang their 'months of the year song' to raisins in a glass of sparkling water to make them dance!!!!
We definitely have some future scientist's on our hands in the infant classroom!!!!

Sounds We Know
Junior Infants have been super busy learning about letters and their sounds. They have been working SO hard practicing these letter sounds and their written formations too.
Here is some pictures of the Junior Infants hard at work tracing letters on each others backs, writing letters on their mini-whiteboards and forming letters using playdough!

Gardening- Aistear
As part of exploratory play in Aistear, the children had the opportunity to work in the planting area, while also using their senses to explore soil, compost, weeds, bulbs and insects.
They had great fun using new gardening objects such as trowels and shovels, when planting daffodil, snowdrop, tulip and crocus bulbs.
We will be so excited to watch these bulbs grow into beautiful flowers in February/March 2022.

Happy Halloween!!
Early Mathematical Activities
We have been super busy in the junior and senior infant classroom this week!
The children practiced their listening skills as we listened to a lovely story called 'A Pair of Socks'.
The children also worked hard listening for any rhyming words and discussing the different types of socks in the story. Afterwards, Ms. Mahony showed the children her big bag of odd socks and the children had to find the pupil in the classroom with their matching sock. There was lots of fun as the children compared the socks and it sparked lovely discussions about the similarities and differences between some of the socks too! The children had so much fun, that they even suggested that we do this activity with their shoes too!!
It is such a fun and lovely way to develop the mathematical skills of both matching and comparing!!
