Aistear- People Who Help Us -The Doctor's Surgery
This month in Aistear we are learning about People Who help us. We set up a Doctor's Surgery in our classroom.
We learned lots of new vocabulary - surgery, medicine, prescriptions, receptionist, stethoscope & patient. The list goes on! The doctor worked so hard checking patients temperatures. The receptionist was busy answering the phone and making appointments.
A big thank you to Nurse Roisín Treacy for coming to visit us and telling us all about her job in the hospital. She listened to our heartbeats, showed us lots of equipment that she uses in the hospital and let us put on an operation gown. We had lots of fun and hope she comes to visit us again soon.

Let's start planting.....
Spring is finally here! Its time to start planting. We planted cress, spinach and peas. We put the seeds deep in the compost and watered the soil. We put them beside the window close to the light.
Watch them grow....
We tasted them and brought them home.......
Spring/ On The Farm Aistear...
This months theme was Spring & On The Farm. In "Games With Rules" we played "Counting Caterpillars" & "On The Farm" bingo. In the "Creative Area" we made Spring lambs with cotton wool. In "Small World" we played with farm animals. We sorted all the animals into different fields. We learned all the names of the animals and their babies. We learned what produce each farm animal gives us. We set up a supermarket where we sold farm produce. We sold lots of potatoes and were very busy putting them into small bags for our customers.
Our Spring Walk.....
We went on a Spring walk around the school. We used our four senses on the walk- our sight, hearing, touch & smell. First we noticed daisies and dandelions growing on the school lawn. We noticed some buds appearing on the trees. There were also some Autumn leaves which hadn't fallen off. We even got to touch the buds. There were lots of daffodils beside The Bug Hotel. We picked a bunch of them to bring back to our classroom. We even saw some frogs in the Bug Hotel pool. We heard chicks chirping in the trees. Once we heard all the cars gathering in the car park we knew it was time to call it a day and get ready for home!
Happy St. Patrick's Day......
We learned the colours of the rainbow- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet. We painted rainbows with crocks of gold for St. Patrick's Day. We are all very excited about wearing green for St. Patrick's Day.

January's Theme- Winter & Weather
January was a very busy month in Aistear. We opened a Winter Clothes Shop in our classroom. The children were busy sorting through the clothes and displaying the Winter clothes for all our customers to see. We were doing Eadaí in Gaeilge so we were able to tell our customers the names of all the clothes in Irish. We learned lots of Irish songs. Our favourite one was "Cuir Ort Do Chóta". We even learned the actions and used our very own coats and hats! It was lots of fun!
More Aistear.........The Artic
We recorded our weather for the week. We noticed that every day was very cold, we had rain two days and the sun only came out once! We learned about a place that is cold all of the time....The Artic! We learned that polar bears live there and they eat seals. We learned about penguins and we made very cute penguins using recycled toilet rolls! We even made our very own Artic using cotton wool, white paint, polar bears, polar foxes & a recycled cardboard box. Take a Look! Some children dressed the "Weather Bear" at the "Games" station.
An Icy Cold Experiment ....
As you well know we are in the middle of a very cold snap and there has been ice on our roads and footpaths. we noticed Joe putting ice on the footpaths one morning and wondered why he was doing this. We decided to get some ice and some salt of our own and see what happened! Each group had three cups with an ice cube in each- one ice cube with no salt, one with a little salt and one with lots of salt.
Can you guess which ice cube melted the fastest?

Bean Bag Games ...
We love playing bean bag games! Our favourite games are "Beanbag Catch", "Pass The Beanbag", "Who's got the beanbag" & "Beanbag Rock"! We have to listen very carefully to the music! If the music is fast we have to pass the beanbags around the room very quickly. That's our favourite part!
Fun in P.E...
Fun with sounds.....
We have lots of fun learning our sounds. We learn a new sound every week. We listen to jolly phonics rhymes, listen to jolly phonics stories & learn how to write each letter. We play lots of different games. We find lots of things in our classroom and match them with the right sounds!
What is Aistear?
Aistear is the early childhood curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years. The word Aistear is the Irish word for journey and was chosen because early childhood marks the beginning of children’s lifelong learning journeys.
Aistear is the key learning and teaching tool used to implement the primary school curriculum in the Infant classroom in Cappataggle N.S. The children play for almost an hour each day, with an emphasis on active learning and oral language development. Curriculum subjects covered during Aistear include: S.E.S.E., S.P.H.E., oral language, reading, writing, maths, art, music and drama.
During the Aistear hour, the children are implementing their numeracy and literacy skills in a more meaningful way through the use of role play, games and real-life situations. We hope you enjoy browsing through the various activities Junior Infants and Senior Infants have engaged in.

September's Theme- "Growing and Changing"
October's Theme- "Autumn"
We had great fun in our Aistear this month. In the creative area we painted hedgehogs using handprints. We made cosy nests for their long Winter sleep. We used lots of different coloured leaves. We played games with conkers, acorns and pine cones in the sandbox. We were busy hiding them in the sand while we counted them! We played Autumn bingo in the "games with rules" area. We learned lots of new Autumn words. We built gardens with lots of trees in the "construction area" and played with squirrels and hedgehogs in the "small world" area.
We went on an Autumn trail....
We learned all about hedgehogs, squirrels and oak trees. Now we know lots of interesting facts about them. We put on our coats and headed off to see what we could find.....We knew we wouldn't see any hedgehogs on our trail because they are nocturnal animals, but we were very disappointed that we didn't see any squirrels!! We found lots of Autumn coloured leaves, berries and pine cones. We even saw two juicy snails and a frog! Lets hope that the hedgehogs don't find them and eat them for dinner!
We made hedgehogs with clay.....
We rolled a ball of clay using the palms of our hands. We used our thumb and fingers to pinch the end into a point to make the hedgehogs face. We then poked in lots of matchsticks for the prickles. We tidied up afterwards and left them on the window to dry.

Santa's Workshop - December Aistear
We had a busy month in Aistear getting ready for Chrstmas. The elves were very busy sorting and wrapping presents for Santa. We had a look through this years Smiths catalogue and picked lots of toys for our list! We made a long list of all the children for Santa's "Good" list! At the Creative station the children drew Christmas pictures with stencils , decorated Christmas cards and made snowmen from recycled socks! The children in the Construction area were very busy building Santa's workshop! It was lots of fun! We can't wait to find out what our January theme is!!
