Thanks Mrs Coen for the ice-cream cones!!
Sports Day in Cappy!
What a fun day in "Turoe".........
Our Aistear theme this month is "The Hotel"
We set up a hotel in our classroom this month. We were busy answering the phone when we got an unexpected call from our friend Barnaby Bear. We thanked him for calling "Sea Rooms Hotel" and asked him how could we help him. He wanted to book in for two nights bed & breakfast & luckily we had one room left! He told us he would be arriving that day so without any delay the chef prepared breakfast and the waitress set the table for our special guest. We also prepared the room for Barnaby! We think he must have got taxi because a car pulled into the car park just before Barnaby arrived at our classroom door! We were so excited to see him! Barnaby came prepared and had packed a bag for his stay with us! Our porter carried Barnaby's bag to his room. Barnaby went for a quick dip in the swimming pool before enjoying a delicious breakfast in our restaurant.
Barnaby was so excited to hear we were doing Aistear in our classroom. He wanted to see all the children's work and spent some time with each group. The children explained what they were doing at each area. Barnaby thought the huge hotel that the children built in the Construction area was really cool. He loved "Under The Sea" Bingo.
We had great fun on the computers today. We showed Barnaby how to play some "Jolly phonics" games. we went to the library to change our books. We picked "Goldilocks & the Three Bears" & "Little Bear's Big Jumper" for Barnaby. We read these books to him and one of the boys even gave Barnaby his glasses so he could see the pictures. Barnaby watched us doing our writing and we showed him how to do a word search.

RSA- Road Safety
Learning good road safety habits at an early age is vitally important. RSA provided a fun day out in Loughrea with a Garda escort to learn all about road safety. We passed our road safety test and even got a road safety licence! What a fun day!
Water is all around us!
This month we learned all about "Water". We use water in our homes, in school, for fun & we need it to live. We did a "Sinking & floating" experiment in Science and learned all about Capacity in Maths. We listened to songs and stories all about "Water". Water is all around us!
Capacity- Fun with water!
We had lots of fun in Maths this week. First of all we gathered loads of different containers of all different shapes and sizes- jugs, basins, buckets and tubs. We investigated how many cups it would take to fill our bucket. Each group predicted how many cups it would take. One group even predicted the right answer which was 10 cups. We also investigated how many wet sponges it would take to fill our ice-cream tub. This took much longer because we had to soak each sponge with water and carefully squeeze all the water into the tub without spilling any. It was so much fun!
Floating & Sinking- Fun with water!
The children had great fun experimenting with different objects to see if they would sink or float in the water. Firstly we predicted whether the object would sink or float. We experimented with feathers, lollipop sticks, bottles, sponges, keys and play dough. We had great fun investigating. We found out that the keys and the play dough sank to the bottom while all the rest floated. A few days later we had three very wise visitors from 6th class who showed us something very interesting. We all remembered that the play dough sank to the bottom but the girls managed to get the play dough to float by moulding the play dough into the shape of a boat and gently dropping it into the water.
Aistear- The Hair Salon
April was a very busy month for our Junior & Senior infants. We set up a hair salon in our classroom. We wanted to find the right name for our new business. The children thought of loads of different names but "Happy Hair Salon" was the one we liked the best. We also liked "Crazy Cuts" but some of the children in Seniors thought this might stop some customers coming in to get their hair cut!! Our stylists were very busy every day, so busy that Ms. Egan couldn't even get an appointment to get her hair done. Our receptionists were very busy answering the phone and taking appointments . Our stylists were busy washing, brushing, curling, colouring and blow drying hair. We made tea and coffee for all our customers and some customers even left us a tip!
In our "Construction Area" the children were busy building a town with supermarkets, hospitals, schools and hairdressers. Our "Creative Area" was very exciting this month. Each group couldn't wait for their day making trendy hairstyles using recycled toilet rolls, wool, felt , glue and stickers. We also made funky head pieces with play dough, buttons and feathers. The children in the games with rules had fun playing "Hairdresser Bingo". This was a fun way to learn lots of new words.
Our Easter Hunt.....
Fun making Easter Baskets........
Fun in P.E......
The Supermarket- People at work
Junior & Senior Infants have been enjoying playing in the supermarket. They were kept busy reading the shopping lists and finding the things they needed on the shelves, buying fruit and vegetables from the fruit and veg counter and not forgetting to pay!
"In the Creative area, we were busy making different kind of bread for the bakery with our play dough. One group even made sausages, rashers and mince meat for the butchers! In our Construction area, we were very busy building huge big supermarkets and we didn't forget to build a trolley bay for all our busy customers! In our "Games with Rules" area we palyed "shopping Lists" & "Crazy Chefs". We were very good at these games and we were able to read the ingredients in "Crazy Chefs" & we even know which shelf to find them on in the supermarket.
Food Dudes come to Cappy!!
Not only was March a very busy month in the supermarket buying and selling food but we were kept busy eating food too!!
We took part in the Food Dudes programme. At first we didn't like some of the fruit and veg but as soon as our taste buds got used of the new flavours, we were able to finish our portions and win our really cool Food Dude prizes! We won really cool stickers, lunch boxes and loads more. It lasted for 16 days so everyone in the class had to help out. Our daily helpers were fantastic. Once they delivered the fruit & veg to the other classes they divided out the fruit and veg evenly at the fruit and veg counter and made sure everyone got a portion! After Easter Ms. Egan will be giving certificates to children who fill out their Food Dude diaries and bring fruit & veg to school.
A visit from Dawn ...and her pet dog!
We had a visit from Dawn from "Dog's Trust" in February. We learned loads of tips on how to look after our pets. Dawn even brought her dog Patch to our school!! Can you find him in the photo? Dawn asked us loads of questions and we knew all the answers. We introduced Dawn to Fluffy and told her about our "pet Shop" in Aistear last month. We all got a certificate and really cool stickers. We coloured pictures of dogs and stuck these up in our classroom.
World Book Day- 5th March 2015
This year we celebrated World Book Day in style. We love reading books in our classroom. The Hungry Caterpillar is one our favourite books so we painted lovely pictures of the very hungry caterpillar and put them up in the hall for all our visitors to see. We went to the library for some quiet time on the bean bags and listened to stories. We are very good listeners ....especially during story time! On World Book Day we all wore red, green & brown colours to school. Can you guess why??
We even got our faces painted!! It was such a fun day. We are looking forward to next year already!

The Clothes Shop- Aistear |
|
This month we did "The Clothes Shop" in Aistear. We set up a clothes shop in the classroom. We worked really hard sorting and folding clothes. We sold socks, jeans, jackets, hats, scarves and loads more. There was loads of bargains and some items were on SALE. The shop assistants priced all the clothes and were busy meeting and greeting all the customers. They made sure to give all the customers their change and a receipt. The customers tried on the clothes in the "changing room" and paid for the clothes with card or cash.
In the Construction area we built big and small clothes shops with windows and doors. One group built a huge Tesco with a car park for all the customers to park their cars. In the Creative area we designed and decorated different items of clothing and hung them up in our Clothes shop for everyone to see. In the Games with Rules area, we played clothes bingo and "Pig in Pants". We decided that the youngest in each group should take the first go.
Happy Pancake Tuesday!
We enjoyed tasting pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. We gathered all the ingredients and cooked them on our new cooker in the classroom. We investigated what happened when we added eggs and milk to the dry mixture. We also investigated which topping we preferred, with "Nutella" looking like a winner!
Junior & Senior Infants - Miss Fiona Egan

Aistear is the early childhood curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years. The word Aistear is the Irish word for journey and was chosen because early childhood marks the beginning of children’s lifelong learning journeys.
Aistear is the key learning and teaching tool used to implement the primary school curriculum in the Infant classroom in Cappataggle N.S. The children play for almost an hour each day, with an emphasis on active learning and oral language development. Curriculum subjects covered during Aistear include: S.E.S.E., S.P.H.E., oral language, reading, writing, maths, art, music and drama.
During the Aistear hour, the children are implementing their numeracy and literacy skills in a more meaningful way through the use of role play, games and real-life situations. We hope you enjoy browsing through the various activities Junior Infants and Senior Infants have engaged in.

The Doctor's Surgery - People At work
hhhdsaa
Please see our pictures below of the children working in the Doctor's Surgery. We learned lots of new vocabulary for example: surgery, medicine, prescription, receptionist, temperature, examine, stethoscope and patient. The list goes on and on!! The doctor worked so hard checking patients temperatures and even had to send some people to hospital in the ambulance. The receptionist was busy answering the phone and made sure that nobody was too long waiting in the waiting room.
PPp
The children in the Construction area were busy building doctor's surgeries, hospitals and roads so that the ambulance could get to the hospital safely. The children in the Junk Art area were busy making medicine and tablets from lots of different materials. The doctor's used these in the surgery to make the patients better. The children in The Small World area were busy playing in the town and driving to the hospital.
Santa's Workshop - People At work
Santa's Workshop went down a treat in Aistear in December. At the Role-Play Station, the elves were very busy wrapping & packing toys into boxes and into Santa's sack. Some elves were busy picking suitable toys for Cappataggle from the toy catalogues. The elves thought frozen toys and computer games should definitely be on the list for Cappataggle! At the Writing Station, the children were busy writing the children's names on the "Good" List! The children in The Construction area built Santa's house in the North Pole and little homes for all of Santa's elves. One group even build a huge warehouse for Santa to store all his toys safely! In the Junk Art area, we made lovely Christmas decorations using pine cones. Once they dried out on the radiator, we painted them! We stuck wire through them and hung them on the Christmas tree!hristmas trehhh. ...... , we painted them and ,, ,nmnnndried out on the radiator drole - play station, the elves were very busy rr, the ttttjjeatea

Our Christmas ConcertIt wasn't just a busy December for Santa and his elves. Everyone in Cappataggle were busy getting ready for our Christmas concert. The Junior & Senior Infants were busy practicing for our school play "The Sleepy Sheperd". Here are some pictures of us all dressed up in our costumes. The Mammies and Daddies did a great job kitting us out for the big night!
Food & The Restaurant
Our next theme was food. We opened a new restaurant in our classroom called "Rhys's Restaurant" where we pretended to be chefs, waiters, waitresses and customers. We ordered starters, main courses and desserts from the menu. The customers were very happy with the service and some even left a generous tip!

In the Construction Area, we built a town with loads of restaurants and huge car parks for the customers to park their cars safely. One group built their favourite restaurant "Supermacs" in the middle of the town. In the Creative Area, we made loads of different foods to sell in the restaurant. Tadgh made a lovely fish dish and Shíona made some tasty looking chips! It was lots of fun but made our tummies grumble! The children in the sand box were busy as usual making cakes and biscuits for the restaurant. Somebody had the bright idea of adding water to make the sand stick!
We read the story "Handa's Surprise". We learned about loads of different fruits. Mrs Collins brought in different fruits for us to taste. We liked most of them. We thought the lemon was very sour but thought the mango was nice and sweet. In Art we made fruit bowls. The Juniors coloured in the fruit very carefully and the Seniors drew their own fruits. They even picked which fruits they preferred. We stuck crépe paper onto the bowls to make a collage. It was very messy but we all helped out and it wasn't long before our room looked nice and tidy again!
Authors came to visit us ...............
We had some very interesting visitors in the Infant classroom. We heard that 1st and 2nd class has some wonderful authors and invited them to come to our classroom as we are brilliant listeners and love listening to stories. The different authors read their fairytales in loud clear voices. We really were a fantastic audience as we sat quietly and its pretty easy to make us laugh!! It was such fun and we really hope that they will come and visit us again soon.
