Our Wildflower Meadow
This year we have decided to start growing a wildflower meadow. To begin with we had to sow yellow rattle seed. Yellow rattle seed is known as the "nature's lawnmower" as it takes water and nutrients from the grass and therefore prevents the grass from growing. In its place wildflowers can grow. The flowers of yellow rattle are pollinated by large bees.

Gardening & Bee Keeping at Cappataggle N.S.
During the month of October we had a visit from Pat Lenihan who gave all classes a wonderful talk on vegetable growing in Ireland. Pat spoke about everything from peas to pumpkins and explained that with the right care and attention we can grow any vegetables in Ireland. He then went on to talk to the children about bee keeping and showed them a working bee hive full of honey combs and explained the process of extracting honey from the combs. It was a very informative and interesting talk with the children asking lots of questions. We are very grateful to Pat for giving of his time so generously.
