5th & 6th Class - Mr Dervan

Congratulations to the children in 5th and 6th on their recent Confirmation. Each child participated in a beautiful ceremony on a gorgeous, sunny day. We are very proud of you all.

With a little help and guidance from scientists from NUIG we completed a Fantastic DNA experiment to extract DNA from a banana! Next step cloning sheep!!!
For Outdoor and Adventure week we tried to learn as much as possible in nature. Here is one example: we went outside and used a variety of found items to create maths equations for our friends to solve.
We enjoyed a visit to our local water processing plant, Glan Agua. Shane gave us a very informative tour where we learned how the water we use in our community is collected, monitored and treated.

Congratulations to Ruth on her fabulous haul from recent feiseanna. Here are just some of her many trophies. Well done Ruth - we are all very proud of you!

We planted Dahlia bulbs to bloom in Summer. We decorated our pots, put in some fabric to avoid losing compost and potted them pointy side up (though there was lots of debate about which end was pointy). Fingers crossed they produce beautiful flowers!
For Engineering Week we undertook a variety of challenges including making a skier from tin foil and lolipop sticks and using marshmallows and toothpicks to construct, We also made some impressive wind powered cars at home.
Happy World Book Day 2022 from all in 5th and 6th Class. We enjoyed dressing up as favourite book characters and sharing these with our friends.

Our Digital Leaders put together PowerPoints for each class for Safer Internet Day. In our class we learned how to report on a website if we are feeling unsafe and looked at lots of different scenarios and how to approach these. It is always best to have open dialogue with our parents or trusted adults in relation to using the Internet.

We enjoyed a lovely visit to St. Killians in New Inn. Transition Year students arranged activities for us. We hurled, played soccer and dodgeball and even got outside for some Orienteering.

We have started a Cookery Club in our class led by Helena. Each week we learn how to make a new recipe in small groups. This week we made pancakes and we are going to develop our skills and challenge ourselves further in the weeks ahead with dishes like Beef Stir Fry with Noodles and Fish Finger Sliders.
We visited the church on the feast of the Epiphany to welcome the Three Kings and to see the baby Jesus. We gave thanks and offered up prayers for the year ahead. Happy New Year from all in 5th and 6th class.
Happy Christmas from all of us in 5th and 6th Class. We visited the church to see the crib and will return on January 6th for the visit of the three Kings.

We enjoyed listening to and discussing 'The Unforgotten Coat', a novel by Frank Cotrell-Boyce. In groups we were each given a different coat as a stimulus for writing a story of our own. The coats also came with polaroid pictures, just like in the story, which helped us create characters of our own. Here are three examples:

Using tin foil, black permanent markers, water and washable markers we were able to make these wonderful Winter silhouette pictures.
In groups we were challenged to make a Christmas Craft from a kitchen roll holder. There was great variety in the results but the winner, as voted by the staff, was the Christmas Snowflake by Conal, Colm and Liam. Well done!

We are enjoying our gymnastics classes with Damien. Our main focus has been on body control and balance. We are also developing our skills of movement using pistol rolls, side rolls, forward rolls and cartwheels.
We tried writing messages to Jack in invisible ink so he could reveal our secret messages. Unfortunately this didn't work very well so we had to analyse our results. We felt that perhaps we over diluted our solution of lemon juice with water and it needed to be more acidic to be effective. We decided on this occasion to write Jack letters in the traditional way!

We had a visit from John and his barn owl Erin to learn more about this amazing bird. We discovered more about dangers to their survival and how we can support them to breed. You can visit www.thebarnowlproject for more information and ways to help.
We began Science Week with an experiment on how to test different materials for suitability as a parachute. We predicted, observed, recorded and made a conclusion.
We had a lovely dress-up day to celebrate the coming of Hallowe'en. With some fantastic costumes it was very difficult to pick a winner but Jack and Mary triumphed with their brilliant Garda and Criminal combo!
Picture
We enjoyed a lovely walk along the Golden Mile with our very informative guide Tom. We were also joined by Fr. Kirby. Afterwards Mary and Bridie gave us treats while we enjoyed a lovely music session.
We had a visit from the Green Schools Traffic Advisor who allowed us all to measure the speed of the traffic passing the school. We then had a classroom talk about the importance of speed awareness and road safety.

What a wonderful Wig Wednesday we enjoyed in aid of Hand in Hand! Well done to our fabulous School Council for organising a fun-filled day with special guest 'wig judge' Garda Jack. Congratulations to Cormac and Ruth who were our class prizewinners.
Each week we are undertaking Science Experiments. This week we saw a chemical reaction when producing CO2 and a very explosive volcano!
Hurling has started this half-term with Liam Gordon every Friday. We are also swimming on Tuesdays and have hurling at lunchtimes with Brendan so we are keeping very active on our return to school.

Our ceidhlidh band has returned for music with Yvonne every Wednesday. Hopefully this year there will be more opportunities for them to perform.

To begin the year we worked in groups to establish what makes an effective pupil and an effective teacher. Mr. Dervan now knows exactly what he needs to work on!

Dear parents,

I would like to welcome all the children back - they have settled in brilliantly and are ready for a great year in fifth and sixth.

We will have hurling each Friday with Liam Gordon this term (weather permitting) so your child will need their own hurl and helmet. We have some spares but it saves us cleaning helmets between uses if everyone remembers their own. We also have swimming on Tuesdays and Band on Wednesdays.

Homework will not start until October and we will send more information on this closer to the time.

This Friday all children can wear a Galway Jersey (or something maroon if they don't have a jersey, like hair ribbons or a jumper) in anticipation of the Camogie All Ireland between Galway and Cork.

If your child attends Ms. Gilmartin her email is ogilmartincappyns@gmail.com

Many thanks,
Shane
