Christmas Jumper Day
This half-term we have been working on the Clay Strand of the Art Curriculum. We have used techniques like pinching and rolling and looked at how artists approach colour when painting clay. Here are some of our Christmas themed creations.
Confirmation
Good morning Parents,
A few points for Confirmation over the next two nights.
The ceremony will begin at 7pm and will be streamed for anyone who wishes to watch at home. https://www.mcnmedia.tv/camera/cappataggle-parish-church
Please arrive at least 5 minutes beforehand to find your seat. These will be labelled with your child’s name. Those playing instruments will have a second seat to leave their instrument in.
Each child will have a confirmation card to fill in and take up to Father Kirby when they are being confirmed. It mentions in the booklet at what point this is. You will need to know the date and place of your child’s baptism for this form – the rest of the information is straightforward.
Each candidate may take 2 other persons with them to Confirmation, one of which will act as a sponsor. The sponsor remains in their seat for the sacrament.
All should wear face coverings.
The instructions from the diocese haven’t changed from when I previously put them up on this class page so they are available below to read in more detail too.
Looking forward to seeing you all.
Shane

This week we had Cycle Right Training with Leroy and Richard. It was an intense two days which taught us many skills from correctly mounting the bike all the way to how to negotiate a right turn. We now feel much better equipped to cycle on the road safely.

This week we have enjoyed lots of fun experiments for Science Week, looking at refraction, making a lava lamp and observing the reactions when substances are combined - like baking soda and vinegar.
This half-term we are working on the skill of balancing in P.E. which has been surprisingly challenging. We performed balances using many different body parts and identified the elements we need for a 'good' balance. We then played a very competitive game of 'Pass the Quoit!'

We had a very busy last day before our well-earned mid-term break. We had our final gymnastics session, did some Autumn planting and had a Halloween parade to show off our inventive costumes. Happy Halloween from all in 5th and 6th Class!
We tackled a very tricky Maths Trail as part of Maths Week which challenged us with data, measures and number questions. We were also asked to upload some of our findings to Seesaw using a new App we have access to called PicCollage
We have been enjoying our weekly gymnastics sessions with Damien in the hall. These focus on developing flexibility, enhancing coordination and improving balance.
Brendan has been developing our reaction speeds with drills and obstacle courses on the Astro. This is an important part of being successful when playing games.
In Art we have worked on the Drawing strand of the curriculum. We have used a variety of pencils and charcoals to explore shading in particular. Today we set up still images indoors and then went outside to choose an interesting perspective to sketch.
In class we have been learning about the hazel tree. We discovered its importance in Irish mythology and observed it's leaves and fruit. Today, after researching ideal growing conditions online, we explored the playground for the best location for a row of hazel trees and decided how many we could plant. We even took along a trundle wheel to estimate efficiently. Hazels need moist but well-drained soil so we are hopeful that when we plant our hazel later in the Autumn that they will bed in well.

Dear parents,
I would like to welcome you all back and thank you for your support in these opening weeks. The children in 5th and 6th have done a wonderful job settling in and adjusting to any changes in school.
I have eased the children into work in these opening two weeks and will gradually increase expectations moving forward. Loughrea School and Office have been quite delayed with book rental books so my apologies for that, but we should have all our books in the very near future.
If your child attends Ms. Gilmartin and Ms. Slattery their email remains gilmartinslatterycappyns@gmail.com.
We will have hurling each Thursday for the foreseeable (weather permitting) so your child will need their own hurl and helmet. We have some spares but it saves us cleaning helmets between uses if everyone remembers their own.
A reminder that homework will not start until after the October mid-term.
Many thanks,
Shane
